The
number of visitors to our island is still very limited. All
accommodations are self contained and offer well equipped cooking
facilities. Fast food and takeaway providers haven't found us
yet. To some visitors this proposes a challenge, because they
are not used to preparing their own food at all, or because
they find it hard to prepare meals with the limited means our
small island stores offer. Restaurants, cafés and bars
are on many travellers' request list...
Believe us, we're working on it! |

One
of the oldest and most traditional bakeries on Atiu in the village
of Mapumai is
AKAI BAKERY
Fresh bread is sold for 70 cents
a "finger loaf". The shop is open from 10 AM
each morning, except for Saturdays, when bread is available
after 11 PM and again on Sunday morning from 5 AM.
Ring Randy at 33207 to place your order. |

built oven.
|
At
10 AM the bread is ready and can be taken out of the oven.

|
|

A large pile
of chain-sawed firewood is always at hand to supply the energy
to heat up the oven.
|

Careful supervising
of the contents is necessary to result in delicious golden
bread.
|
Doesn't
it make your mouth water?!

Hillary
and daughter Annerlie
Wouldn't
you like to start your day being greeted with such a welcoming
smile when getting your bread roll for breakfast?
|
Well,
you can have this every day, if you go to
JUMBO BAKERY
a husband and wife company, established
eleven years ago, on the side road in Teenui before 8 AM
in the morning for stocking up on your daily bread supply. Joe
and Hillary Kae sell
bread rolls, cheese rolls, scones or doughnuts for
NZ$ 0.50 a piece. Some times "Jumbo" also makes
delicious banana cakes, muffins, custard pies or cream buns.
Try one! |

Hillary's
dream place for a "cup of tea" still "work
in progress"..

|

|
If
you can't make it all the way out to Teenui, don't worry. Jumbo
Bakery's fresh bread is also on sale at the
Atiu
Development
Corporation
store
in Areora village on the main road. Place
your order in advance, and bread will be put aside for
you.
Of
course, ADC doesn't just sell bread. Local growers bring in
fresh vegetables and fruit when in season. There is a wide
variety of bagged, bottled, canned and frozen goods, tobacco,
soft and alcoholic drinks and all the bits and pieces you
need for household and garden.
|
Most
Atiu
families own shares
in ADC!

ADC's
store is open all day
Monday to Friday from 7 AM to 7 PM
Saturday: 7 AM to 9 AM and 5 PM to 7 PM.
If you run
out of petrol, buy it at the ADC's petrol station in Teenui
where it's always a bit cheaper!
The station is open Monday to Saturday from 7 AM
to 12 PM.
|
For our Atiu
people only, ADC runs the agency for the ANZ
savings bank. If you need to receive or send money
from Atiu, you can do this from the ADC store through Western
Union. ADC's friendly staff will help you with
your freight, being agent for the local shipping line Taio
Shipping.

In
Teenui, Margaret Simpson, daughter of Atiu's Member of Parliament
Upokomaki Simpson, manages the family-owned
Vaiurua
Store
catering for the daily basic needs
of the surrounding villagers. Her family members are keen planters,
so the store has fruits and vegetables for sale when in season.
In between seasons, Margaret bakes delicious fresh scones and
doughnuts. |
