Now that you have read so much about our little island paradise, perhaps you want to come and visit. Here is some information that may help you in dealing with your travel agent at home or in trying to book your flight through the Internet. In order to get to Atiu, you must first fly to Rarotonga, our country's main island with the only international airport in the Cook Islands.

Air New Aealand logo (2K)Air New Zealand is our main carrier to the Cook Islands.

  • From Europe you can fly to Rarotonga three times a week in approximately 23 flying hours.  With Star Alliance connections from London Heathrow via Los Angeles and Papeete, Air New Zealand flies you to Rarotonga directly every Sunday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • From Europe and  Asia with Star Alliance partners Air Canada, All Nipon Airways, Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Tai International and United Airlines you can fly via Bangkok, Singapore, Hongkong and Sydney to Auckland. Air New Zealand operates eight direct weekly flights from Auckland to Rarotonga each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and twice on Thursdays and Sundays.
  • From Christchurch (New Zealand) you can now fly directly to Rarotonga on Wednesdays.
  • From Nadi (Fiji) another flight takes you to Rarotonga on Saturdays.
  • From Canada and the USA you can connect to an Air New Zealand flight in Los Angeles flying to Rarotonga each Wednesday,  Friday and Sunday via Papeete (Tahiti).

A new airline for the Cooks, Pacific Blue, has commenced flights from Sydney (Australia)via Christchurch (New Zealand) to Rarotonga

Air Rarotonga logo (8K) conducts the inter island flights within the Cooks and takes you to Atiu. In order to help our accommodators, please make sure that you have a confirmed booking for your inter island flight to and from Atiu, before you book your accommodation!

You can fly

  • from Rarotonga directly to Atiu and back four times a week on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
  • from Aitutaki to Atiu and on to Rarotonga on Tuesdays .
  • from Atiu to Aitutaki on Tuesdays.


Check with Air Rarotonga or your travel agent for a more economic triangle fare between Rarotonga, Aitutaki and Atiu or Rarotonga, Atiu and Aitutaki. Adding another southern group island may provide an attractive option. Planes have only limited freight space

Our island has no public transport. The airport is 7 km downhill from the villages! Therefore it is  essential that you book your accommodation including airport transfer. All accommodators on Atiu offer this service at a reasonable fare and welcome you at the airport with an ei (flower garland, left).
