Papa
Paiere Mokoroa
is one of Atiu's last living storytellers. Retired teacher
of Atiu College, trained in sociology and anthropology, co-author
of the book "Atiu - An Island Community" and "Cook
Islands Culture", he is a rich source of knowledge, the
ideal prerequisite to do an
HISTORICAL
TOUR.
A number of his stories take
you back to his childhood days some 6 decades ago. Others
even to pre-missionary times. The two-hour tour (which is
more likely to turn into a four-hour tour, because it awakens
your interest and questions) starts right at his place where
he explains the background of the name of his section Taparere,
also the name he gave his lodge.
You will learn about teachers and schools, missionaries and
churches and eventually descend (literally!) to dwelling places
and legendary sites of his forefathers.
There is the natural swimming pool, now dried out, of ariki
(chief) Rongomatane's 12 wives (of whom he sent back home
11 when he embraced Christianity!), and, near his former homestead,
the 37 m long platform wall (patu paepae- wall enclosing
chief's traditional meeting place) called Vairakaia
with its 47 limestone slabs.

Many
historical sites have been destroyed or changed by people or
natural causes. When recently Paerangi
Mata'iapo was officially invested, adjacent to the destroyed
original site
he had a marae (sacred place of ancient worship and traditional
rites) rebuilt according to research undertaken on remaining
maraes on other islands. The tour continues to Papa Paiere's
family land where, at Araki there are also stalactite
remains of a formerly fenced-in area. Araki overlooks the swamp
land, where his ancestors used to plant their taro and
Te Koka, where a taunga (master canoe builder)
taught his grandson to swim in times that the water level was
still much higher than it is today. |

Araki
The falling
water level is a problem on our island as can also be seen
at Te Kapi. In the early 20th century wash basins were
built near streams in each district. These can still be used
today in times of drought.
The HISTORICAL
TOUR continues to traditional landing sites
and ends with a refreshment at one of the beaches. It
costs NZ$ 26.00 per adult and NZ$ 5.00 for children above
5 years. Book through your travel agent, accommodator
on Atiu or directly by ringing or faxing (+682) 33034 between
1 and 4 PM.
